Overview
James is a patent agent in the Vorys Houston office and a member of the intellectual property (IP) group. He has experience in preparing patents for the chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science and pharmaceutical fields.
James received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Houston, working under Professor Scott Gilbertson in his medicinal chemistry lab. Specifically, James synthesized Boger α-helix mimics to interact with beclin-1 to modulate autophagy. Additionally, he worked on synthesizing peptidomimetics to disrupt the protein-protein interaction between the serotonin 2C receptor and the PTEN protein. James completed his postdoctoral research training from Rice University in Professor Julian West’s organic chemistry lab, where he worked on designing a radical ligand transfer reaction where "inert" alkanes were transformed into alkyl azides, using iron as the metal catalyst and photocatalytic difunctionalization of alkenes by a ligand-to-metal charge transfer and radical ligand transfer reaction.
His post-doctoral research was published in several academic journals, including Chemical Science, ChemComm and Frontiers in Pharmacology. In addition to his Ph.D., James received his B.S. in biochemical and biophysical sciences from the University of Houston.
