Publication Calls Smallwood 'Champion of Diversity'
Carl Smallwood, a partner in the Vorys Columbus office, was profiled in the 2013 edition of Ohio Super Lawyers magazine for his work to increase diversity in the Ohio legal community.
In the profile, highly respected central Ohio lawyers praise Smallwood’s achievements and the progress he has made while in leadership roles of several endeavors. Smallwood is credited for making diversity a priority at law firms throughout Columbus through the Managing Partners Diversity Initiative, which he formed while serving as the first African-American president of the Columbus Bar Association. The story details how he later was called upon as the first leader of the Law and Leadership Institute, a four-year, law-related academic enrichment program held in law schools for high school students from underserved communities across Ohio.
Others interviewed for the story applauded Smallwood’s effectiveness in litigation and resolving complex disputes:
“‘Carl’s one of the finest lawyers I’ve had the opportunity to litigate a case against,’ says David Barnhart with Philip J. Fulton Law Office, who has been on the opposing side of Smallwood many times over the years. ‘He makes me a better lawyer because I know my preparation has to be top-notch.’
Barnhart also appreciates that going up against Smallwood means that it will be a fair, civil, and professional battle. ‘With Carl, it’s not a win-at-all costs, scorched earth policy,’ he says. ‘He’s a straight shooter. You can always trust what he says.’”
