Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease is pleased to announce that Matthew E. Albers, Tiffany Bingham Briscoe, Daniel J. Clark, Whitney C. Gibson, Robert J. Krummen, Christina M. Lyons, Joseph B. Mann, Timothy B. McGranor, Adam L. Miller, Ariel A. Mullin, William H. Oldach, III, Nicholas M.J. Ray, and Michael J. Settineri have been named partners of the firm.
Albers is a member of the health care group in the Cleveland office. He advises in all areas of health care law, but focuses his practice on health care mergers and acquisitions activity. Albers also assists clients in other areas including physician and provider certification, registration, licensure, and accreditation; Medicare and Medicaid billing, coding, documentation, payment, and reimbursement; teaching physician and non-physician practitioner supervision and billing; federal and state fraud and abuse laws and related government investigations; the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA); Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA); and professional disciplinary actions. He is also a former associate general counsel for University Hospitals Health System in Cleveland. Albers received his J.D. magna cum laude from Case Western Reserve University School of Law, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif. He received a B.A. in Political Science from The Ohio State University.
Briscoe is a member of the litigation group in the Houston office. Her practice encompasses litigation and trial work in premises liability, products liability, and employee wrongful death cases throughout Texas. An experienced litigator, Briscoe also handles commercial litigation matters, including the representation of financial and lending institutions in real estate litigation cases. In addition, she has significant appellate experience before several intermediate Texas courts of appeal, the Texas Supreme Court, and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal. Briscoe was a clerk for the Hon. Eric T. Washington, Chief Judge of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and was an assistant professor of l aw at South Texas College of Law. She received her J.D. from Harvard Law School, where she worked as a research assistant to the Hon. A. Leon Higginbotham. She received her B.A. summa cum laude from Xavier University of Louisiana.
Clark is a member of the labor and employment group in the Columbus office. He has significant experience with employment discrimination cases, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the enforcement of non-competition agreements, collective bargaining, and union issues. Clark has defended a Fair Labor Standards Act collective action, obtained a directed verdict in a jury trial of a race discrimination case and has represented schools and institutions of higher education. He received his J.D. with honors from The Ohio State University Michael E. Moritz College of Law. Clark also participated in the Ohio State Summer Law Program at Oxford University in 2000. He received his B.A. summa cum laude from Wittenberg University, where he received the Jeffery Mao Award in Political Science and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
Gibson is a member of the firm’s litigation group in the Cincinnati office. He has particular experience representing companies and individuals in cases involving internet issues, including internet defamation. Gibson also has experience in False Claims Act cases, RICO cases, government contract cases, class-actions, medical-malpractice litigation, probate, trust and fiduciary litigation, breach of contract, copyright, trademark, false advertising litigation and complex commercial litigation. He received his J.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Law where he was a member of Order of the Coif and was an associate member of the Cincinnati Law Review. Gibson received his B.S. from Penn State University.
Krummen is a member of litigation group in the Columbus office. He has counseled and represented corporations, government entities, nonprofit organizations, and institutions of higher education for federal and state court litigation, government relations, and regulatory matters. He is experienced in appellate, constitutional, commercial, environmental, oil and gas, tort, and securities litigation. Recently, Krummen had the opportunity to serve, on secondment, as in-house counsel at Chesapeake Energy Corporation in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, assisting with litigation management for the company’s Eastern Division. Prior to joining Vorys, he served as Deputy Solicitor for the Office of the Ohio Attorney General, during which time he was responsible for a wide range of civil and criminal appeals on behalf of the State of Ohio and its agencies. Krummen received his J.D. from Harvard Law School and his B.A. summa cum laude from The Ohio State University. He also served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable R. Guy Cole, Jr. of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
Lyons is a member of the corporate and finance group of the Houston office. Her practice is broad, and includes counseling both profit and nonprofit entities in matters involving business formation, entity selection, corporate governance, director and officer liability, fiduciary duties, and banking regulatory compliance. She regularly assists firm clients in the structuring and negotiation of joint ventures, mergers and stock and asset acquisitions on both the sale and buy side and has also assisted in the start-up of new companies and de novo banks. She is also a registered nurse and worked in one of Columbus’ largest hospitals in its cardiac and level 1 trauma intensive care units. Lyons received her B.S.N. from Ohio State University and her J.D. magna cum laude from Capital University Law School, where she was a member of the Order of the Curia.
Mann is a member of the probate and tax group in the Columbus office. His federal tax practice is broad, and includes tax planning, taxable and tax-free corporate mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and restructurings, partnerships, limited liability companies, and joint ventures, including investment funds, financial instruments, venture capital transactions, real estate transactions, New Markets Tax Credits, and Historic Tax Credits. Mann received his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law where he was a Stone Scholar and was a staff member and Editor of the Columbia Law Review. He received his B.S. summa cum laude from Case Western Reserve University.
McGranor is a member of the litigation group in the Columbus office. His practice is broad and he has significant experience related to oil and gas litigation and commercial litigation. He has defended a variety of actions in the trial and appellate courts of both the state and federal systems, as well as regulatory proceedings. McGranor received his J.D. summa cum laude from The Ohio State University Michael E. Moritz College of Law where he was a member of Delta Theta Pi and the Order of the Coif. In addition, he served as the Associate Editor of the Ohio State Law Journal. McGranor received his B.A. summa cum laude from The Ohio State University.
Miller is a member of the corporate and finance group in the Columbus office. He counsels clients on mergers and acquisitions, securities reporting and disclosure, business formation, entity selection and corporate governance issues. Miller has represented public and private companies on both the buy and sale side in multiple stock and asset acquisitions. He received his J.D. from the Emory University School of Law and his B.A. from Trinity University.
Mullin is a member of the commercial finance and real estate group in the Cincinnati office. Her practice is focused on commercial real estate matters, representing lenders, owners and developers in the financing, purchase, sale and development of commercial real estate properties. Mullin has significant experience in Federal Housing Administration insured financings of loans for new construction, purchase or refinancing of apartment complexes, nursing homes, senior housing projects, assisted living and board and care facilities involving various structures. She served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Dana L. Rasure of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of Oklahoma. Mullin received her J.D. and M.A. from the University of Tulsa College of Law and her B.A. from the Purdue University.
Oldach is a member of the technology and intellectual property group in the Washington D.C. office. His practice focuses on patent and trademark litigation and appellate practice. Oldach has litigated cases in many United States District Courts, as well as the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and the United States International Trade Commission. In addition, he consults in patent and trademark prosecution matters and in intellectual property aspects of corporate transactions. Oldach received his J.D. summa cum laude from The Ohio State University Michael E. Moritz College of Law where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and the Managing Editor of the Ohio State Law Journal. He received his B.S.E.E. cum laude from Lehigh University.
Ray is a member of the probate and tax group in the Columbus office. His practice focuses on real property tax valuation disputes and appeals. Ray also has significant experience in other aspects of state and local taxation including personal property taxation, sales and use tax, and oil and gas tax. He has represented clients before the Ohio Department of Taxation, the Ohio Board of Tax Appeals and the Supreme Court of Ohio. In addition, Ray has served as lead counsel in scores of Ohio Board of Tax Appeals cases and has appeared before more than 60 of Ohio’s 88 county boards of revision. He is also the current chair of the Ohio State Bar Association's Taxation Committee. He received his J.D. cum laude and his LL.M. in taxation from Capital University Law School. Ray received his B.S.B.A. from The Ohio State University. Ray is also a Certified Public Accountant.
Settineri is a member of both the energy and utilities group and the labor and employment group in the Columbus office. He represents clients in utility and energy matters, including litigation, before the Ohio Power Siting Board, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio and the Ohio Oil and Gas Commission. Settineri’s energy practice includes a significant emphasis on the development and siting of renewable energy projects. As a member of the labor and employment group, he advises clients on ERISA fiduciary compliance issues in addition to representing clients in ERISA litigation matters including claims for benefits, breach of fiduciary claims and recovery of delinquent contributions. He received his J.D. cum laude from Capital University Law School and his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan.
